Choosing Fish, Vegetables And Fruits Stalls are categorized according to the wares they sell. There would be around 5 types of stalls, including those for fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, and spices and other foodstuffs. Since Shanghai residents prefer fresh food, the domestic helper may have to visit the market more than once a day. Learning to buy at the market is necessary, as groceries sell only canned food and processed food items; while supermarkets are usually more expensive in selling meat and vegetables. Wet markets can be found in almost all districts in Shanghai. One of the domestic helper's first tasks is to get familiar with the marketplace nearest to the house where she is employed. It is best to visit the market between 8:00 - 12:00 in the morning and between 4:00 - 6:00 in the afternoon. You may have to learn simple Chinese terms as well in order to buy items from the market. Fish usually has the word "Yu" in it. Eels are popular as a Chinese dish. There will also be frog, turtle, squid, shrimps and prawns, crabs, lobsters and mussels. A wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables will also be available. Most farms markets close at 6:30 pm & Supermakets will closed at 9:30 . If you are too late, you will find only left over items at the stalls.
